Can't Miss Aspen Hiking Trails

The Grottos Trail

The Grottos Trail is an easy 0.6 mile Aspen area hiking trail nestled in the White River National Forest that's accessible to nearly everyone! Just be sure to check ahead of time before visiting in times of inclement weather as the trails leading to this area often close with heavy ice or snowfall.

The Ute Trail

Located in walkable distance to downtown Aspen, Ute Avenue Trail is an easy and clearly marked trail that goes on for 2.2 miles and even includes a free gondola ride from nearby ski slopes on the way back. Talk about convenience!

Crater Lake Trail

This 3.8-mile out-and-back Aspen-area hiking trail may not be the road less-traveled, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth a visit. Moderately ranked in terms of difficulty, it even features a lake and scenic mountain views.

Hunter Creek Trail

This trail is a medium-length of 5.0 miles, and is moderately ranked, making it an ideal spot for those looking to advance to more challenging trails. It also happens to offer astounding views and the aural pleasures of babbling streams under-foot and the accompanying wildlife.

Cathedral Lake Trail

Cathedral Lake Trail is on the more difficult side, and is 5.3 miles long. Many Aspen area adventurers choose to hike here, but this spot also offers fly fishing, backpacking, and camping opportunities. When should you visit? This Aspen hiking trail is best experienced June through September.

Lost Man Trail

Not all those who wander are lost. But that shouldn't stop you from wandering around Lost Man Trail, a convenient trail that starts at the Lost Man Campground just 7 miles outside Aspen and continues about 8.8 miles through Independence Pass and beyond.

Conundrum Creek Trail to Conundrum Hot Springs

At 18 miles long, Conundrum Creek Trail is oft-used for both hiking and camping. If you do decide to camp in the area near Conundrum Hot Springs, though, you'll need a permit, so plan ahead first before you pack your Subaru full of camping gear!

Four Pass Loop

Best experienced from April through October, Four Pass Loop is pricier than some other trails, as it involves a $15.95 shuttle service and $30 all-day parking. That said, at 27.1 miles, this trail will keep you busy all day. For reference, Four Pass Loop is ranked as a difficult trail.
